Frequently Asked Questions
How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected in New York?
Portable fire extinguishers in New York must be professionally inspected once every 12 months under NFPA 10 and state fire code. Dry chemical extinguishers also require 6-year internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing every 5 to 12 years depending on type. Haight Fire handles all three levels of service.
Do you come to our location or do we bring the extinguishers to you?
We come to you. Haight Fire sends a certified technician directly to your business to perform the inspection on-site. Any extinguisher that needs to leave the premises for service is replaced with a loaner unit so your location is never left without coverage.
What is the difference between an inspection and a recharge?
An inspection verifies that the extinguisher is properly mounted, pressurized, undamaged, and compliant with NFPA 10 labeling and tagging requirements. A recharge refills the extinguishing agent after discharge or when pressure is found low. Haight Fire performs both at our certified Newburgh facility — most recharges are completed same-day or next-day.
Do you provide loaner extinguishers while ours are being serviced?
Yes. Any extinguisher that leaves your premises for off-site maintenance or hydrostatic testing is replaced with one of our own units for the duration. Your business is never left without required coverage, and there is no additional charge for loaners.
What is the 6-year internal maintenance requirement?
NFPA 10 requires dry chemical extinguishers to be fully disassembled and internally inspected every six years regardless of whether the unit has ever been discharged. The process includes internal examination, replacement of required components, reassembly, and recharge. Haight Fire performs this at our certified Newburgh facility.
What is hydrostatic testing and does my extinguisher need it?
Hydrostatic testing is a pressure test that verifies the structural integrity of the extinguisher cylinder. CO2 and water-based extinguishers require testing every 5 years; most dry chemical models every 12 years. If your extinguisher is due, Haight Fire will identify it during the annual inspection and schedule testing at our certified facility.
Is it cheaper to replace an extinguisher than have it serviced?
In most cases, no — especially with Haight Fire. Because we operate our own certified service facility, we can recharge and recertify most extinguishers at a fraction of replacement cost. Companies that lack this capability default to recommending replacement. We will always give you an honest assessment, and if replacement is genuinely the better option, we carry the full Amerex and Buckeye line at competitive prices.
How do I know when my next inspection is due?
Two ways. First, the NFPA 10 compliant tag on each extinguisher shows the date of the last inspection and the next required service date. Second, Haight Fire AutoBook automatically contacts you before your next inspection is due — you do not need to track it yourself.
Are your technicians certified?
Yes. All Haight Fire technicians are certified per NFPA 10 requirements and New York State licensing standards. Haight Fire holds certifications from NFPA, ICC, and NAFED and is GSA approved for government facility service.
What types of businesses do you service?
Haight Fire services any commercial or industrial property required to maintain fire extinguishers under New York State fire code — including restaurants, office buildings, warehouses, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels, property management companies, retail stores, municipalities, and construction sites.
What areas do you cover?
Haight Fire provides on-site fire extinguisher inspection and service throughout Orange, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Sullivan Counties in New York; Fairfield County, CT; Bergen County, NJ; and Long Island. Call (845) 562-6485 to confirm coverage in your specific area.
What extinguisher brands do you carry and service?
We service all major brands and are an authorized distributor of Amerex and Buckeye Fire Equipment — two of the most trusted names in commercial fire extinguishers. We carry both lines in stock for same-visit replacement when needed.

Our Certified Service Facility in Newburgh, NY
Most fire extinguisher companies lack the equipment to perform internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing in-house. That means your extinguishers get shipped out, the timeline stretches, and you pay more.
Haight Fire operates its own fully certified service facility at 199 Little Britain Road in Newburgh, NY. Recharges, 6-year internal maintenance, and hydrostatic pressure testing are all completed in-house — faster, at lower cost, and with full accountability.
This matters for multi-location businesses and property managers who need turnaround time measured in days, not weeks.
Types of Fire Extinguishers We Service
Haight Fire inspects, recharges, and certifies all portable fire extinguisher types used in commercial and industrial settings:

- Class K Wet Chemical — commercial kitchens, restaurants, food service
- Water-Based — warehouses, storage, light industrial
- Class D — metalworking, manufacturing, specialty industrial

- Halotron - extinguishers that discharge a rapidly evaporating liquid, leaving no residue and causing no damage to sensitive electronics.
We are an authorized distributor of Amerex and Buckeye Fire Equipment. If a unit needs replacement rather than service, we carry the full line and can swap it in the same visit.
